Pro .NET 2.0 XML

ISBN: 1590598253

Publisher Apress
Author(s) Bipin Joshi
ISBN 1590598253
Release Date 16 April 2007

XML is the de facto language for communication within and between distributed applications, whether they’re on the Internet or a corporate network. XML is successful because of two strengths: it has a highly-structured human readable format and it can be transmitted as pure text. No matter how disparate applications and their architectures may be, text files can always be read, and therefore can accept XML data. This makes XML-based solutions advantageous over rival technologies like remoting.

Pro .NET 2.0 XML is the first book to provide a complete solution to XML on the .NET Framework 2.0 including the new .NET 3.0 extensions that are being released in January 2007. It provides you with everything you need to know to take advantage of XML in every aspect of your job–including integration with Windows Communication Foundation.

* This is the first book that describes how XML interacts with Windows Communication Foundation (part of the new .NET 3.0 extensions).
* Author Bipin Joshi is a Microsoft Certified Trainer who regularly teaches classes on XML. He provides the kind of clear, precise guidance that you need.
* This will be the most complete book on .NET 2.0 XML available. It covers everything you need to use XML effectively.

OReilly Learning XML, 2nd Edition

OReilly Learning XML, 2nd Edition

Publisher O’Reilly
Author(s) Erik T. Ray
ISBN 0596004206
Release Date 01 September 2003
Page 432

Although Learning XML covers XML rather broadly, it nevertheless presents the key elements of the technology with enough detail to familiarize the reader with this crucial markup language. This guide is brief enough to tackle in a weekend.

Author Erik T. Ray begins with an excellent summary of XML’s history as an outgrowth of SGML and HTML. He outlines very clearly the elements of markup, demystifying concepts such as attributes, entities, and namespaces with numerous clear examples. To illustrate a real-world XML application, he gives the reader a look at a document written in DocBook–a publicly available XML document type for publishing technical writings–and explains the sections of the document step by step. A more simplified version of DocBook is used later in the book to illustrate transformation–a powerful benefit of XML.

The all-important Document Type Definition (DTD) is covered in depth, but the still-unofficial alternative, XML Schema, is only briefly addressed. The author makes liberal use of graphics, tables, and code to demonstrate concepts along the way, keeping the reader engaged and on track. Ray also goes deep into some discussion of programming XML utilities with Perl.

Learning XML is a very readable introduction to XML for readers with existing knowledge of markup and Web technologies. It meets its goals very well–to deliver a broad perspective of XML and its potential. –Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered:

* XML overview
* XPointer
* XLink
* XHTML
* Presentation with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
* Document Type Definitions (DTDs)
* XML Schemas
* Transformation with XSLT

Fuzzy Database Modeling with XML (Advances in Database Systems)

Fuzzy Database Modeling with XML Advances in Database Systems

Publisher Springer-Verlag
Author(s) Zongmin Ma
ISBN 0387242481
Release Date 10 February 2005

Fuzzy Database Modeling with XML aims to provide a single record of current research and practical applications in the fuzzy databases. This volume is the outgrowth of research the author has conducted in recent years. Fuzzy Database Modeling with XML introduces state-of-the-art information to the database research, while at the same time serving the information technology professional faced with a non-traditional application that defeats conventional approaches.

The research on fuzzy conceptual models and fuzzy object-oriented databases is receiving increasing attention, in addition to fuzzy relational database models. With rapid advances in network and internet techniques as well, the databases have been applied under the environment of distributed information systems. It is essential in this case to integrate multiple fuzzy database systems. Since databases are commonly employed to store and manipulate XML data, additional requirements are necessary to model fuzzy information with XML. Secondly, this book maps fuzzy XML model to the fuzzy databases. Very few efforts at investigating these issues have thus far occurred.

Fuzzy Database Modeling with XML is designed for a professional audience of researchers and practitioners in industry. This book is also suitable for graduate-level students in computer science.

ISBN 0735709971
Release Date 15 July 2000

PHP is an open-source Web scripting language that’s gaining steam in the development community, especially in the Apache Web server realm. With a syntax that draws heavily on C, PHP appeals to advanced programmers who are moving to the Web from traditional software development.

Web Application Development with PHP 4.0 isn’t your run-of-the-mill language tutorial. Authors Ratschiller and Gerken purposely designed its content to appeal to coders who already are proficient in PHP, but in need of advanced programming techniques and high-level application-development skills. Assuming a strong programming foundation, this book can be considered a next-level PHP tutorial.

Drawing on their own experience of what’s really important in PHP development, the authors dive into topics such as linked lists and associative arrays. They also weave together topics like security and database access with such software-development issues as three-tier architecture, versioning, and program requirements. This balance makes for a nice fit for developers who have mastered the basics, but are looking to hone their skills to move to the next level.

The book also goes into how to extend PHP by modifying its Zend language engine via the C source code. A companion CD includes PHP, MySQL, and Apache, as well as a number of utilities and the source code from the book. If already you’re deep into PHP and want to graduate to guru status, this book’s for you. –Stephen W. Plain

OReilly Java and XML

OReilly Java and XML

Publisher O’Reilly
Author(s) Justin Edelson
ISBN 059610149X
Release Date 01 December 2006

Two hot topics come together in this developer’s guide from Brett McLaughlin, Java and XML. Both Java and XML are cross-platform technologies; by using Java for code and XML for transporting data, you can build truly portable applications. This title is aimed at intermediate to advanced programmers; while XML topics are explained more or less from scratch, readers will need prior knowledge of Java.

The book begins with an overview of XML and its uses, and goes on to explain how to parse XML by using the Simple API for XML (SAX 2). Next, there is coverage of how XML is validated by using Document Type Definitions (DTDs) and XML Schema, and transformed by using eXtensible Stylesheet Language (XSL). Brief coverage of Sun’s Java API for XML is followed by a detailed look at the Java Document Object Model (JDOM), a new API devised by the author in association with O’Reilly, the publisher.

The last part of the book is more advanced, and covers applications of XML and Java. There are chapters on Web-publishing frameworks, XML Remote Procedure Calls (RPCs), using XML to read and write configuration data, and generating XML with Java. There is also a short business-to-business example. Appendices provide an API reference to the various specifications discussed in the book.

The strengths of Java and XML include the author’s deep knowledge of his subject, and a writing style that is both clear and enthusiastic. If you happen to know a lot about Java and not much about XML, this is the ideal title. Readers who already have a good grasp of XML basics might be frustrated by the amount of introductory material. –Tim Anderson
