Endocannabinoids: The Brain and Body's Marijuana and Beyond

Endocannabinoids: The Brain and Body's Marijuana and Beyond
CRC (2005-11-01) | ISBN: 0415300088 | 584 Pages | 5.9 MB | PDF

This volume explores research on marijuana-like substances produced naturally by the human body and brain. These endogenous molecules, or endocannabinoids, constitute a uniquely conserved and ubiquitous physiological control system in a variety of species and plays fundamental roles in development and cell death. The authors discuss this remarkable progress in marijuana research including identification of genes encoding endocannabinoid receptors, isolation of endocannabinoids and entourage ligands, and functional identification of transporters and enzymes for the biosynthesis and degradation of these endogenous substances.

Author:Roberto Refinetti

Publisher:CRC | Pages:688 | 2005-10-21 | ISBN:0849322332 | PDF | 26.52 MB

Circadian Physiology highlights the basic processes and latest research findings in circadian biology and describes how this knowledge applies to the prevention of jet lag and the malaise associated with shift work, the treatment of sleep disorders and depression, and the timing for effective administration of medicines. The second edition is updated to include recent research developments such as the discovery of new retinal photoreceptors, the identification of several non-hypothalamic circadian pacemakers, and the elucidation of genomic and proteomic mechanisms of biological timing. Each chapter includes a summary, exercises, and suggestions for further reading.

“This up-to-the-minute reference explores current trends, disease etiology

and associations, novel assessment tools, and modern laboratory tests to

promote coordinated treatment of comorbid substance abuse, psychiatric

disease, and general medical conditions-recognizing the causal relationship

between substance abuse and medical and psychiatric disorders and the effect

of addiction on the outcome of individual patient recovery. Provides a

discussion by Pietro Castelnuovo-Tedesco on the psychodynamic principles that

guide the treatment of patients with substance abuse disorders-with or

without concurrent medical or psychiatric illnesses! Reviewing major

epidemiological studies on psychiatric comorbidity, Substance Abuse in the

Mentally and Physically Disabled addresses · diseases such as cirrhosis of

the liver, stroke, depression, dementia, AIDS, and those of the neurological

and cardiovascular systems that are closely related to alcohol and drug abuse

.withdrawal symptoms, drug cravings, and agitation in recovery of drug-

dependent patients · delay of emotional healing in drug abusers · substance

misuse, behavior, and physical health in the elderly · additional topics!

Written by seasoned experts in the field, Substance Abuse in the Mentally and

Physically Disabled is a timely and comprehensive tool for psychiatrists,

neuropsychiatrists, and neuropsychopharmacologists; psychologists and

substance abuse and addiction specialists, social workers, and counselors;

primary care physicians; rehabilitation specialists; pharmacologists;

behavioral scientists, and medical school and graduate students in these

disciplines.”

Mathematical Physiology

Title : Mathematical Physiology
Author : James Keener , James Sneyd
Publisher: Springer
ISBN : 0 - 387 - 98381 - 3
PDF 788 pages English

Mathematical Physiology provides an introduction into physiology using the tools and perspectives of mathematical modeling and analysis. It describes ways in which mathematical theory may be used to give insights into physiological questions and how physiological questionss can in turn lead to new mathematical problems.
The book is divided into two parts, the first dealing with the fundamental principles of cell physiology, and the second with the physiology of systems. In the first part, after an introduction to basic biochemistry and enzyme reactions, the authors discuss volume control, the membrane potential, ionic flow through channels,
excitability, calcium dynamics, and electrical bursting. This first part cocludes with spatial aspects such as synaptic transmission, gap junctions, the linear cable equation, nonlinear wave propagation in neurons, and calcium waves.
In the second part, the human body is studied piece by piece, beginning with an introduction to electrocardiology, followed by the physiology of the circulatory system, blood, muscle, hormones, and kidneys. Finally the authors examine the digestive system and the visual system, ending with the inner ear.
This book will be of interest to researchers, to graduate students and advanced undergraduate students in applied mathematics who wish to learn how to build and analyze mathematical models and to become familiar with new areas of application, as well as to physiologists interested in learning about theoretical approaches to their work.
The inclusion of numerous exercises and models could be used to add further interest and challenge to traditional courses taught by applied mathematicians, bioengineers, and physiologists.
